Reception

Children join the Arnold Lodge School reception class in the September following their fourth birthday. Although most children come directly from the Nursery many pupils join the school at this stage. The reception classes occupy the whole of the ground floor of the Pre-Preparatory School with dedicated bright and airy spaces for children to explore, create, investigate and play. The small class sizes and wealth of books and equipment available ensure that learning can be initiated and encouraged by the interests of the individual child. In addition to the Early Years Curriculum the children enjoy French, ICT, music and swimming during the summer term. Children in Reception can join a number of clubs including Spanish, ballet, tap, karate and chess and are taken on visits to local places of interest to supplement a topic they are covering. The children also participate in a busy schedule of school events including sports days, music concerts and plays, book weeks, charity days, Christmas concerts and themed days.

Early Years Foundation Stage
The curriculum covers six areas of learning and underpins all future development and education:
Personal Social and Emotional Development;
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy;
Communication, Language and Literacy;
Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
Physical Development;
Creative Development.

Years 1 and Year 2

In Years 1 and 2 our children build upon the skills and experiences they have encountered during the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception). The learning is still based in a largely social atmosphere, but greater formality is gradually introduced with pupils following the full range of curriculum subjects by Year 2.

The small classes and the individual attention children receive from a close knit team of teachers and classroom assistants, mean that teaching can be differentiated and each child can be set individual challenges. Pupils visit places of educational interest throughout the year and are encouraged to join an ever increasing variety of lunchtime and after school clubs to broaden their experience including junior disco, seasonal crafts, sewing, tennis and science club in addition to the clubs offered in Reception. Physical activities play an important role with the children enjoying a PE session, games session and swimming lesson every week.
